ABSTRACT

This chapter suggests a way to approach the sharing of cognitive tasks by humans and machines. The most successful sharing is characterised by the presence of processes which facilitate mutual decision making, and sharing in celebration or commiseration. The sharing of purpose is the starting point for much sharing between humans, particularly in the work place. The interrelationship between trust and complacency has already been considered and some brief observations have been made on complacency, trust and automation in aviation and health. Optimising the levels of trust between human and machine for critical human-machine situations is vital, but difficult. The technology-centred approach to automation relies on comparability between machines and humans, and the unique contributions that humans offer to share tasks tend to be forgotten. Sharing-centred automation moves automation philosophy away from items such as technology and humans to a process.
