ABSTRACT

The history of diversity in four countries (UK, France, Australia, and US) will be briefly discussed so that various aspects of their experiences can provide comparisons to the evolution of Singapore’s own unique history of diversity. Our conclusion is that in the Singapore case, a firmer guided hand has been a necessity to make multiculturalism and multiracialism work. This is accomplished through creating institutions and formulating and implementing relevant and tough policies which differentiate Singapore from other multicultural societies. Examples of how this process works are elaborated in subsequent chapters.
