ABSTRACT

CMIO multiracialism is a major platform for the organisation of a meritocratic society. It has a long history of issues, and government institutions and policies that have evolved over the past 50 years. Singapore’s population is divided into two categories, citizens and permanent residents (PRs), and foreigners (non-residents). The total population in 2015 wasiss currently about 5.5 million, with 70% citizens and PRs, and 30% foreigners. Residents are classified as belonging to one of the four race categories: Chinese, Malays, Indians, and Others. As Singapore develops as a global city, race categories are being challenged and adapted, and diversity evolving. Managing diversity remains critical to maintaining social cohesion and rootedness in society.
