ABSTRACT
This chapter presents the literature relating to the determinants of individual innovative behavior in high technology product development organizations. Two of the major researchers on problem solving style reviewed in this literature review are Jabri and Kirton. Leadership, in this literature review, has been broken down into leader-member exchange and innovative behavior, leader-member exchange and climate perceptions, and leader expectations and innovative behavior. Kirton's Adaption-Innovation theory became known in 1976, when Michael Kirton wrote a paper on his Adaption-Innovation theory titled "Adaptors and Innovators: A Description and Measure" that was published in the Journal of Applied Psychology. He observed that people produce qualitatively different solutions to similar problems and constructed an inventory identifying adaptors from innovators. Kirton's inventory was based on personal observations, intensive interviews, and relevant literature. It is the contention of Adaption-Innovation theory that individuals can be located on a continuum ranging from an ability to "do things better" to an ability to "do things differently.".
