ABSTRACT

The importance of the service sector in the domestic economy has been recognised for some time, with the share of gross domestic product (GDP) produced by this sector exceeding 60 per cent in most industrial countries, and accounting for more than 65 per cent of total employment in these countries (World Bank, 1996). The role of the service sector in the domestic economy has, consequently, been the subject of many studies (Fischer, 1939; Clark, 1957; Fuch, 1968; Lewis, 1973; Singelmann, 1978; Shelp, 1981; Gershuny and Miles, 1983; Kravis, 1983; Nusbaumer, 1987a; inter alia). Although services have come to dominate economic activity within the industrialised countries, whether they will achieve the same impact in the international economy is still open to question.
