ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to investigate the internationalisation of the service sector, in general, and the business services sector in particular, through the examination of secondary information. The main data problems inherent in this analysis will be highlighted. The role of service transactions in international trade in goods will be considered, and an assessment of the significance of services as facilitators of global integration will be provided. Finally, the choice of the business services sector as the focus of this research will be discussed. However, prior to this it is necessary to address conceptual issues: firstly, how to define service sector activity; and secondly, to identify and classify international service transactions.
