ABSTRACT

How does criticism relate to theory? This chapter introduces a range of theoretical positions that might underpin a critique, emphasising the connections between theory and critique. The model introduced in Chapter 3 is developed further here, to provide some specific directions for the kinds of theory which are effective in landscape architecture criticism. Sources for theory are discussed, and a selection of five bodies is proposed as a meaningful way to shape the approach to criticism covered in this book. The potential for critiquing from multiple perspectives is introduced, an approach which will be developed further over subsequent chapters. A key emphasis established within this chapter is how crucial it is to be clear about the kind of theoretical underpinning that is being used in a critique.
