ABSTRACT

In Britain, Europe, and Australia, the First Assistant Cameraman (First AC) is usually referred to as the Focus Puller. During production the First AC works directly with the Second AC, the Camera Operator, and especially the Director of Photography (DP). This chapter discusses in detail each of the First AC’s duties and responsibilities. These duties are separated into three categories: preproduction, production, and postproduction. On most productions, the First AC will usually be involved in many of the preproduction events. During preproduction, the DP will often prepare a list of camera equipment that will be needed on the production. The proper performance and execution of the duties and responsibilities of the First AC is vital to the smooth operation of the production. Camera assistants must set up the camera each day, keep it clean, change lenses and filters, load film into the camera, and most important, keep the shot in focus during filming.
