ABSTRACT

The chapter title references Fukuyama’s famous 1989 essay which prophesized the disintegration of the former Soviet Union and the spread of a hedonistic neoliberal globalization that might result in a demoralized citizenry because denying the possibility of truth except in primarily economic terms. The chapter critiques President Donald Trump’s social, political, and educational agendas and their implications for music teachers in an age of post-truth and at a time when many are concerned that music education may be in global decline. As is explained, Trump’s disrupting and destabilizing tendencies, although worrisome in many respects, may afford music teachers opportunities for strengthening their positions and status in education. The time might be more propitious than ever before in recent years for those teachers to champion civic literacy through music and art and thereby help reinvigorate the profession.
