ABSTRACT

In this chapter we explore the stages of the coaching relationship as well as the stages within a systemic coaching session. There is an examination of chemistry meetings and their inherent challenges. Drawing on research, the role the relationship is argued to be the most critical in coaching, as has been seen in related fields like psychotherapy and counselling. The IDDD model (Inquiry, Dialogue, Discover and Design) is further explored, the importance of collaborative inquiry is emphasized. There are several practical tools shared for gaining stakeholder insight through various forms of 60- and 720-degree feedback and attention is paid to how any feedback is given. The chapter then turns to the coaching process and offers an exploration of systemic versions of two models developed by Peter Hawkins: the CLEAR model and the four levels of engagement providing both depth and breadth to coaching’s work. There are excerpts from interviews done with leaders on their view of the current coaching process including contracting and the chapter concludes with a postscript: What’s my role if an individual client wants to leave the organization?
