ABSTRACT

Geac was founded in May 1971 by R. Angus German and Robert K. Isserstedt in Ontario, Canada. At its inception the emergent company had no involvement with the library profession, the first product being an inventory control system for municipal school boards. That was followed in 1974 by a significant move into the banking world with the development of a retail banking system, which was installed at Vancouver City Savings Credit Union, Canada’s largest credit union. There appears to be no solid evidence for the derivation of the company name but one plausible suggestion is that it derives from General Accounting and Computing, a reasonable title in view of the early activities.
