ABSTRACT

Bags, boxes and baskets are excellent resources to help introduce estimation and measures. A story bag is a way for young children to experience a story. It is a tool to enhance the learning of concepts. It is a fun, interactive learning experience for children and adults alike. In the bag can be a copy of the book, a woolly hat, some shells, a book about lighthouses, a game to play, a basket, a toy cat and any puppets that practitioners may have. Feely bags are good for exploring shapes. Put a small selection of shapes into a bag. Children, without looking in the bag, use their fingers to feel as much of the shape as they can. A fun way to start learning about shapes is with a ‘shape hunt’. Children can explore and identify shapes in their own environment and everyday life.
