ABSTRACT

The chapels of the Shoguns are of surpassing interest that one almost forgets the other shrines of Nikko; yet, if it were anywhere else, the Shinto temple of the “Three Guardian Deities” of Nantaizan would be thought quite worth looking at. Nikko has long been a favorite haunt of the rain dragon cannot have entirely deserted his caves on Nantaizan, for the whole Nikko region gets a full share of both the June and September downpours; however, a dozen streams and waterfalls are all the more beautiful for that. The American Church Mission has lately built a pretty little church for English services, and there is a large colony of missionaries at Nikko, though Karuizawa probably takes the greater number. Some stout-hearted pilgrims take in four other mountains in the round, giving several days to the whole expedition and sleeping at Nikko or Chuzenji.
