ABSTRACT

Chapter 1: Introduction. In this opening chapter, the reader is introduced to the main argument of the volume. The chapter summarizes key assumptions related to teaching and learning English in the disciplines, including the need to tailor materials to particular disciplinary practices, focusing on the way that these are discursively realized. The main concerns of ESP course designers and the contemporary learning and skills development needs of ESP learners are highlighted. The purpose of the book, which is to develop a research-based, multidimensional model for ESP pedagogy, is also described. The chapter also provides a brief introduction to the case study which informs the conceptual model by providing context for the project and describing the ethnographic research methods used in data gathering, organization and analysis.
