ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the general profile of the region and its economic development followed by a brief discussion of public administration in the Netherlands. It provides background information and an update on the Stimulus developments up to now, followed by an analysis of the project in the theoretical setting of organising capacity. Together with the bordering North Limburg region, Eindhoven accounts for one half of national research and development expenses, which puts it among the European top three of knowledge-intensive industrial areas. The city of Eindhoven and the Province of North Brabant were the initiator of the meeting which produced the action plan. All parties concerned have taken their responsibilities. The West Corridor aims at the spatial reorganisation and revitalisation of the western part of Eindhoven. Until the mid-1980s, the prosperous economic development of the Greater Eindhoven area was closely bound up with the success of some major companies in the region: Nedcar, DAF, and most of all, Philips.
