ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the way in which the city and the metropolitan region of Turin have organised themselves to cope with the restructuring process in its economy. It describes a general profile of Turin and describes the main characteristics of the spatial-economic development of Turin. The chapter examines the administrative structure and focuses on two specific projects: the restructuring of the Lingotto complex, a former production site of Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino (FIAT), and the development of the Environmental Park. The city of Turin is situated in northern Italy and belongs to the 'First Italy', which is the traditional industrial heartland of the country. The motor vehicle industry has been one of the key manufacturing industries of the 20th century. The FIAT company and its industrial complex have been recognised as an asset for the Turin economy. Fundamental economic and technological changes induced industrial companies to reorganise their production and to close factories in the Turin region.
