ABSTRACT

This chapter covers a wide range of issues where the rights of children are violated. It considers two very different issues–forced marriage and Female Genital Mutilation. These are particularly problematic and sensitive issues for both society and the law. Protecting children's rights to security and freedom from harm by eradicating child abuse remains a seemingly unobtainable goal. One issue which remains contentious and unresolved in England relates to the right of a parent to discipline his or her child through the use of corporal punishment. Child sexual exploitation is a form of child sexual abuse. It occurs where an individual or group takes advantage of an imbalance of power to coerce, manipulate, or deceive a child or young person under the age of 18 into sexual activity (a) in exchange for something the victim needs or wants, and/or (b) for the financial advantage or increased status of the perpetrator or facilitator.
