ABSTRACT

During the autumn of 1926, psychology student Lore Posner attended a lecture at Frankfurt University. 1 The renowned professor Kurt Goldstein and Adhemar Gelb were talking about their research within gestalt psychology. This subject addresses how we sense and interpret our impressions. What our awareness is drawn to in certain situations and which meanings we apply to what we are aware of varies from person to person. This can also be connected to phenomenology, an understanding and appreciation of people understanding something—a phenomenon—in their particular way. The phenomenon is not only determined by what exists out there, but also through bodily, emotional and thought processes. Yet, with training we can perceive more clearly what is novel in a situation, colouring it less with our expectations, comparisons, and old mindsets.
