ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a brief introduction to the theory of bisexuality and its place within psychoanalytic theories. It is an extremely complex topic and yet highly relevant and essential in order to understand how female sexuality and femininity are theorised in psychoanalytic literature. The aim of this chapter is to introduce few important and essential elements of psychoanalytic theories that will be used later to illustrate how psychoanalytic understanding of femininity is very different than that of the social and human sciences. This is done by first outlining how the theory of bisexuality drew Freud’s attention. Next, I describe Freud’s position in relation to the theory of bisexuality and how he situates this theory in relation to his own theories of psychoanalysis.
