ABSTRACT

Strachey (1933, p. 112) suggested that this particular lecture is based on two of Freud’s earlier writings, “Some psychical consequences of the anatomical distinction between the sexes” (1925j) and “Female sexuality” (1931b). Both papers have been discussed in detail earlier in this book (see Chapters Two and Three). Hence, there is some repetition in this chapter of topics and arguments that we have already discussed, but, despite this, reading this chapter will allow us to grasp how Freud’s arguments developed and what importance he now places, at this stage of his career, on the centrality of castration in the development of human sexuality.
