ABSTRACT

Hanif Kureishi is an award-winning playwright, screenwriter, novelist and memoirist. His works include his breakthrough film My Beautiful Laundrette (1986) and other films such as The Mother (2003) and My Son, the Fanatic (1997), along with novels such as Intimacy (2001), The Buddha of Suburbia (1990), which he adapted into a BBC drama series, and The Black Album (1995), which he adapted for stage. The interview took place not long after the publication of his memoir, My Ear at His Heart (2004), a book that is as much about his father and uncle as it is about Kureishi’s own life. His autobiographical writing is notable on occasions because it can attract criticism from members of his own family. His insights into writing multiple genres is unique. The interview took place at his literary agent’s in London in 2005.
