ABSTRACT

Sally Wainwright is a scriptwriter, producer and director who has worked in television, film and radio. She is famous for creating memorable drama series such as At Home with the Braithwaites (2000–2003), Last Tango in Halifax (2012–2016), Happy Valley (2014–2016) and Gentleman Jack (2019). She also scripted and directed the BBC’s To Walk Invisible (2015), a biographical film about the Brontës’ household in Haworth. Her later work is typified by being focused on Yorkshire and the contemporary and historical lives of its inhabitants. Earlier in her career Wainwright was scriptwriter on ongoing television soap operas Emmerdale and Coronation Street, as well as working on the long-running BBC radio serial drama The Archers. She has won several British Academy and Royal Television awards for her scripts and for creating such enduring drama series. The interview was filmed by the BBC in London in 2016, while Gentleman Jack was being conceived and made. The interview focuses mainly on her most recent work at the time, To Walk Invisible, but before the final version of this was broadcast.
