ABSTRACT

In Chapter 2, we present routines teachers can use to manage assigning student work. Such routines are needed so students have a clear understanding of what is expected of them, and to help teachers maintain a sense of regularity in their classroom. We identify two tasks: communicating clear instructions and explaining expectations for quality work, for which management routines are essential. Specific routines, such as the use of recurring assignments and constructing collaborative expectations are explained as examples of procedures teachers can use to systematize how they assign student work. We conclude with some things teachers might consider related to selecting routines related to assigning student work including keeping students’ well-being in mind and using digital systems.
