ABSTRACT

Once collected, student work needs to be interpreted for meaning and the results of that interpretation organized for future use. In Chapter 4, we present routines to support accurate and efficient interpretation of student work. Interpretation refers to the procedural knowledge used to understand student performance on an assignment. Interpretation involves both appraisal and monitoring. Specifically, we focus on three tasks: planning for interpretation, aligning the interpretation process to the assessment purpose, and systematize marking. We also explain some of the nuances of providing feedback to students and highlight ways that students can be involved in the interpretation process.
