ABSTRACT

What are the best ways for teachers to keep track of and return student work? Once student work is interpreted for meaning, the results of that interpretation are organized and stored for future use. What are the best ways to give students back their work, recognizing that the feedback process becomes “live” for students when they receive this work? In this chapter, we present global routines for teachers to manage their assessment practices including routines for recording student work, returning student work, and putting feedback in focus. The routines for recording student work help teachers record summative and formative results. Routines for returning student work vary by whether the teacher intends to return student work immediately or not. With regard to providing feedback, these routines help teachers prepare students for feedback, provide different types of feedback, ensure all students receive feedback, and reduce the time it takes to provide feedback.
