ABSTRACT

Karen is taking her first computer science class at her local junior college over the summer. It is the first day of class, and she got to class early to get a good seat in the first row. As the room begins to fill, she looks around without success for a familiar face. She can’t help but notice that the room is mostly full of young men, all looking quite ready to dig into the course. She wonders, “Are they better prepared than I am for this course?” There are a few women sprinkled here and there throughout the room, but Karen thinks maybe they look out of place.
