ABSTRACT

The applied science course was in effect the precursor of a more developed modular course which was introduced in 1979/80 for the fourth year target group. A search of the field note archive, carried out at the end of the third year of the project, yielded 16 items relating to science courses for target group pupils. These were equally divided between observation of lessons and interviews with teaching staff. The relatively small number of field notes reflects the decision taken by the research team to concentrate its efforts on careers education and related aspects of the EEC programme. The idea for collaboration pre-dated the EEC project although the project was undoubtedly a significant influence in bringing it to fruition. The initiative was taken by the head of science who had become increasingly aware that the traditional science courses were failing to motivate the less able pupils.
