ABSTRACT

A wider view is: Curriculum evaluation is the collection and provision of evidence, on the basis of which decisions can be made about the feasibility, effectiveness, and educational value of curricula. When curriculum evaluation first became formalized it was to provide information on the value of the many curriculum development projects which were taking place at that time. Many consider that the principal form of curriculum evaluation should be through the assessment of attainment of individual pupils. A fundamental weakness of examination results as measures for curriculum evaluation is that they come too late to do much about it, either for individuals or for a school as a whole. The self-evaluation by school staff will need to be rigorous and not simply an exercise in public relations. The staff will need to provide evidence on the basis of which others can judge the whole ethos of a school.
