ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to initiate pupils of all abilities into a programme which will give each of them a general education. It ensures not only that each pupil achieves mastery of the key concepts and areas of knowledge, but also that each pupil is encouraged to extend his understanding to the limit of his capacity. The needs of remedial pupils may be met in some schools by hiving them off into a separate department. This is essentially a divisive approach, and pupils tend to respond by living down to the expectations the school evidently has of them. The needs of slow learners serve as an introduction to the school's wider provision of resources for learning. If resource or inquiry-based learning is being advocated for its own sake, a central resource facility, with optical indexing and additional ancillary help on a considerable scale, will be justified.
