ABSTRACT

Over the years Soviet curriculum theory has changed little. It was and is designed to create a 'New Soviet Man' and promote communism through the correct interpretation of worthwhile knowledge. The all-round upbringing of Soviet boys and girls should be informed by a communist ideology, high moral standards, spiritual enrichment and harmonious physical and mental development. The following subjects are spread rationally over the second level of schooling: Russian language and literature, mathematics, history and the Constitution of the USSR, geography and economic geography, biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, a foreign language, mechanical drawing, physical culture, art and music. Three types of institutions offer higher education courses. The universities, of which Moscow and Leningrad are the most famous, enjoy the most prestige. Polytechnics offer high-level technological education in an enormous number of specialized subjects. Pedagogical institutes prepare students for teaching positions in the upper stage of the unified school.
