ABSTRACT

The one truly revolutionary subject to enter the national curriculum has been technology. Indeed it would not be an exaggeration to say that it was invented for the curriculum and has gone on to become part of the extended core, together with English, mathematics, science and a modern language, which will remain fully compulsory subjects until 16. Technology was quite the most revolutionary thing in what otherwise was a traditional ten-subject curriculum and at first sight seemed to sit uneasily alongside the other nine. Technology was a new revolutionary subject, instilling panic in the ranks, but there was too little investment compounded by divisions within local education authority advisers and HMI. Revolution patently needed to be followed by evolution. The key lay in training, interpreting, expanding, modifying, and applying common sense. Technology stands at the crossroads. Some of the criticisms are less than disinterested.
