ABSTRACT

Though most information about liaison and continuity strategies emanates from the secondary sector, it would be misleading to suggest that initiatives are seldom taken by primary schools. A school's commitment to the improvement of transfer and liaison arrangements can be demonstrated by the appointment of a member of staff to take care of this aspect of organisation. The common secondary-school practice of establishing posts combining liaison and the pastoral care of first-year pupils has much to commend it. Its main advantage is that, of many new adults to be confronted, someone familiar is there to help pupils through the potentially difficult first few weeks in upper school. Barnehurst illustrates several important features of effective transfer and liaison schemes. Though it was conceived and has been nurtured by an individual, many others have been actively involved; the wider community of parents, ex-pupils and colleagues in other sectors has taken interest in its success.
