ABSTRACT

The educationalists relation to Dewey could be likened to the modern citizen's relationship to the Bible. The opinion was that many ideas were good and ought to be brought to practice, but rather few had read the original. The editor of the journal - Artur Bendixson – organized a school in Gothenburg between 1901 and 1904, a school that came to be central for the educational progressive movement in Sweden. With the brief notes on the history of Swedish education, the author have sketched out some elements in the educational tradition that are necessary to have as a background in order to understand the changes in the conception of schooling. The American curriculum work and American progressivism were linked to universities. In Austria, the educational development seemed more free from academic structures. Schools of the future and not of the past. In the middle of the Swedish summer, Dewey is presented to the Swedish teachers.
