ABSTRACT

An integrated or multi-disciplinary approach, as exemplified by Modern Studies in Scotland, presents possibly the best framework for study of Europe in a broader perspective, however there is no comparable subject that is widely taught in the English and Welsh secondary school curriculum. The subjects with greatest scope for study of Europe and where it is most acceptable and appropriate are history, geography and modern languages. The tendency among the teachers interviewed was to believe that Europe should no longer be considered in isolation but be taught as part of an interdependent world system. Where teaching about Europe is concerned all the individual problems faced by teachers are compounded by the fact that specific references to the European dimension are conspicuously missing in recent official pronouncements on the curriculum, and by the lack of consensus among educationalists in general on the need to teach pupils about Europe.
