ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the intonational structure of two dialects of Korean, Seoul and Chonnam, and proposes a prosodic hierarchy for both dialects based on the groupings evident in intonation patterns. The intonational structure in Seoul is hierarchically organized in such a way that an Intonational Phrase can have more than one Accentual Phrase, which in turn can have more than one word. The chapter discusses the tonal pattern of the Accentual Phrase in Seoul dialect. The Accentual Phrase has a tonal pattern demarcating the beginning and the end of the phrase. In order to state formally the choice of LHL versus HHL, the chapter also describes the laryngeal characteristics of Korean obstruents. For the Chonnam Accentual Phrase, the tones are realized as LHL or HHL, where each tone is mapped to each mora of the Accentual Phrase from left to right and the fourth and the following moras are all realized as low tones.
