ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a set of experiments that fleshes out the earlier informal observations with enough tokens to allow statistical tests of the two accounts. It discusses the results of the first experiment showing the domain of the Lenis Stop Voicing rule. The chapter also discusses other phonological rules whose domain is the Accentual Phrase, Post Obstruent Tensing and Vowel Shortening based on more informal observation. Informal observation shows that other postlexical rules such as Post Obstruent Tensing and Long Vowel Shortening also apply within the Accentual Phrase. The chapter shows that the Accentual Phrase is a better prediction of the domain of Lenis Stop Voicing, Post Obstruent Tensing and Vowel Shortening in Korean, than the Phonological phrase, a constituent defined by the Prosodic in terms of the syntactic structure. It also shows that the number of the Accentual Phrases changes depending on speech rate; the faster the speech rate, the fewer the Accentual Phrases within an utterance.
