ABSTRACT

In 2016, a group of digital activists unveiled a campaign designed to engage and activate millions of global users in the fight to uphold network neutrality. Battle for the Net was largely a byproduct of another internet activist organization, "Fight for the Future," which began in 2011 to fight against the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and PROTECT IP Act (PIPA). The network neutrality debate is unique because it is both shaped by digital dialogic communication and holds the potential to impact future digital dialogic communication practices. Dialogic communication is directly opposite from monologic policies, or policies where an organization simply uses a digital space to direct messages outward from the organization to target audiences.
