ABSTRACT

Defining the concept of the LGBTQI+ ally in North America and Australia, this chapter first highlights historical and contemporary perspectives of allyship. Asking, who is an LGBTQI+ ally and why, the chapter describes how numerous researchers have adopted diverse definitions, ranging from supportive heterosexual allies, or another version, which includes allies who self-identify as supportive members within LGBTQI+ communities, as well as allies whose identities may be fluid or inexplicit. Next, with reference to schools, universities and local communities, the chapter highlights seminal work, which has examined the role of teachers and teacher educator allies, who aim to combat homophobia and transphobia. Finally, it is argued that the definition of the LGBTQI+ ally has been increasingly widened to include mainstream private, public and not-for-profit organizations and high-profile individuals in politics, arts, science and sport.
