ABSTRACT

Much local material, especially inscriptions on tablets, biographies of local celebrities, and geographical, economic and other data on the institutional life of the people, was published for the first time and the gazetteers are the only place to look for the material. The data used are all that can be found in the provincial gazetteers and, barring accidental mistakes, there is no room for the selection of data to suit a priori conclusions. The data used are collected and compiled from records of water-control activities listed in the chapters on water-control in the provincial gazetteers. The table shows a number of water-control works constructed during the two periods of the spring and autumn and the Warring States. Although several provinces are included in the table, all the gazetteers of the eighteen provinces of China proper were examined.
