ABSTRACT

The aims of the interviews were to uncover the strategies news organizations are putting in place to deal with massive disruptions to the employment status of their photojournalists and to explore the extent to which new models are emerging around the sourcing of photographs. The interviews were recorded using an H1 Zoom audio recorder, and audio files were downloaded onto a secure server according to the ethics guidelines given by the University of New South Wale. All of the interviewees acknowledge the monumental disruptions that have seen staff photographers’ transition out of a stable workplace and into the open/free market. One of the biggest hopes for the future, acknowledged by all interviewees, is the continuing value of the well-crafted photograph. As King states, “Photography adds value. It is the very thing that pulls the reader into a story”. Watt adds, “Visual storytelling is a growth area, highly produced work will become more visually sumptuous”.
