ABSTRACT

The resources for grand strategy and armed conflict are wide-ranging in nature, involving finance, industrial production, training, human resources more generally, weapons, information and intelligence, fixed assets and infrastructure. Despite being smaller in population than France, Britain was able to finance its war so well that it could also subsidize European powers in joining Britain in one or other of the coalitions against France. The contending parties in the US Civil War and World War, the author showed little difference in the quality of their equipment. Sheer numbers are important, but are not the whole story with other factors such as training, recruitment, promotion systems, medical skills to keeping the human assets healthy with food and equipment, logistics and other supports. Perhaps the training to be a foot soldier was similar as the role itself was similar, but as conflicts became more advanced so too did the training for higher-order roles and where soldiers were required to operate specialized equipment.
