ABSTRACT

Social action is the result of structural accounts and individual action which, when combined, leads to social capital. Structural accounts involve the obligations, norms and rules that are part of society. Social enterprises can improve the life of human beings by actively participating in frugal innovation. Historically social movements have typically connected with changes in industry or technology that influence society. The key components of the maker movement involve access to technology, spaces and community. The technology includes experimenting with different methods that involve the fabrication and production of goods or services. Opportunities are created by reacting to information that is then enacted in the market. In order for frugal innovation to occur, entrepreneurs need to be alert to opportunities made possible through the maker movement. Most research on innovation has tended to focus on economic and industrial development, which emphasised the historical nature of many innovations.
