ABSTRACT

The colonizing ideology serves as the backdrop for the historical events involving people of color that subsequently unfolded, beginning a process of, among other things, the continued construction of race as a social construct and then using that ideology as the rational for creating segregated schools and communities in the United States. Redlining is basically a discriminatory practice where banks, insurance companies, and realtors refuse or limit loans, mortgages, insurance, or to show houses, within specific geographic areas. Interventions rooted in developing an empathetic mindset that promotes a classroom context of trust and understanding, improving teachers’ knowledge and application of emotional and instructional supports, and including evidence of students’ academic potential, have been shown to shift teachers’ disciplinary practices and increase overall positive student outcomes.
