ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the general problems urban farmers encounter. An efficient control of labour, technology and capital is a necessary condition for a successful agricultural production. Thus, an urban farmer’s success in cultivation is partly dependent upon the labour, technology, and capital available to him/her. A farmer who is not able to avoid or solve agricultural problems experiences decreased productivity. On the problem of lack of capital, the cultivators call on the government to institute a financial organization that caters specifically for the financial needs of urban farmers. Vital agricultural information which urban farmers lack should be provided by specialists. Stealing of crops is an important problem, the cultivators in Accra mentioned. Stray animals, especially ruminants that destroy growing crops, are also a matter of concern for urban cultivators in Accra. In Accra, the main supply of water to the general public is tap water.
