ABSTRACT

The selection of an appropriate vendor strategy must be considered when looking at the IS/IT infrastructure. From an IS/IT perspective, business requirements definition provides the key external driver of change. An IS/IT department may wish to change from being reactive to business needs, to being proactive. This will change the way that department must work with the business user community. Business requirements for information systems may require support for particular categories of hardware, software, Netware and ‘method ware’. Organisations must understand the real issues that face them as they try to exploit their information resource. If there is a need to change and evolve, then the organisation’s requirements must be fully defined before looking at vendors’ strategies: these are, after all, only solutions. Technical strategies, of which the computer aided systems engineering strategy is just a part, need to be driven by business requirements.
