ABSTRACT

Many youth are involved with both the child welfare and juvenile justice systems. It will depend on which system the youth was first involved in as to how the education staff (ES) becomes involved in the case. If the youth is initially brought into the system via criminal charges, the ES receives notification from a juvenile justice agency. If the action team is successful in maintaining the education of foster youth more consistently, and they are changing schools less often, the crossover rate in the county will be impacted as youth are initially experiencing a decrease in disengagement from school. The ES will need to undertake a new transcript request each time a youth leaves detention and share it with the school of enrollment. The youth may have academic deficits as a result of moving schools or trauma impact related to involvement in the foster care system.
