ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the theories used to analyze the data and understand the discourse of early adolescent Latina girls and their teachers. These include feminist theory, Latina feminist theory, particularly its emphasis on the importance of lived experience as well as postfeminist theory and the critiques of postfeminist theory, Critical Race Theory (CRT) and Crenshaw’s theory of intersectionality. Feminist and postfeminist analysis are useful in constructing a picture of the school context while CRT and intersectionality are critical lenses for analyzing and understanding the girls’ experiences.
