ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the current literature on early adolescent girls in school as it relates to the research findings. This overview highlights issues that were of greatest concern to the girls, include maintaining friendships with both boys and girls and the “drama”—the gossip about friendships, romantic relationships and betrayals that led to verbal and physical fights between girls. This chapter reveals the universality of these issues among the girls regardless of their standing in the social hierarchy of the school. The purpose of this chapter is to create context and share the daily experiences, and the response to those experiences, of a Latina girl at the school site.
