ABSTRACT
Chapter 9 explores how Blockchain can manage the interrelationship of censorship, online surveillance, and free speech. Free speech plays an important role in democracy, freedom of association, and freedom of expression. It is a fundamental human right. Without the freedom of the press and support for information integrity, development in countries that struggle to house, educate, and feed vulnerable people cannot happen. Freedom of expression and access to information play a crucial role in good governance, transparency, and accountability—and, in turn, sustainable development. Blockchain technology can offer secure social networks and verified journalism, protecting not just content but also its creators.
