ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 details the particular features of France as a setting for prison research. It describes the structure of the French prison system, and provides a discussion of the cultural and historical intricacies that are relevant to the study of prisoners in France. Chapter 2 also lays out the methodology employed in the French Prison Study, and details the research procedures, sampling, methodological approach, and survey and interview questions. The chapter concludes by presenting the main objectives of the study.
